Oran, situated on Algeria’s Mediterranean coast, is one of the country’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities. Relaxed, dynamic and welcoming, it combines a strong Mediterranean character with Spanish, Ottoman and French influences and is famously associated with Raï music and fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent.
The city’s long and varied history can be seen throughout Oran’s architecture and historic quarters. Highlights include the Bey’s Palace, the historic fortifications overlooking the city and an impressive collection of colonial-era buildings. The Spanish influence is particularly evident around the old city and the dramatic Fort of Santa Cruz, which occupies a commanding position above Oran with spectacular views across the city and Mediterranean coast.
Oran is also an important centre of Algerian culture. It is widely regarded as the birthplace of modern Raï music, a style that developed from the musical traditions of western Algeria before becoming internationally famous. Its cafés, markets, waterfront and lively streets give the city a distinctly different atmosphere from Algiers and the historic cities of eastern Algeria.
The city also played an important role during the Second World War. Oran and its surrounding coastline were among the principal Allied landing areas during Operation Torch in November 1942, adding another fascinating chapter to the city’s extensive history.
