Béni Isguen is one of the five historic fortified towns of Algeria’s M’Zab Valley and one of the most distinctive places to visit in the Ghardaïa region. Built on a hillside and enclosed by defensive walls and monumental gates, the ancient ksar has preserved much of its traditional Mozabite character.
For the local Ibadi community, Béni Isguen has particular religious and cultural importance. Its carefully preserved streets, traditional houses and distinctive architecture provide a fascinating introduction to the history and way of life of the M’Zab.
Exploring Béni Isguen
The old town is best explored with a local guide, walking through its narrow streets and discovering the traditional architecture that has evolved over centuries to suit both the climate and social customs of the region.
One of the highlights is Bordj Cheikh El Hadj, an historic watchtower overlooking the settlement. From the higher ground surrounding Béni Isguen there are superb views across the town, where ochre, blue and white buildings rise above the surrounding palm groves.
Traditional house museums also provide an opportunity to see the interior of a Mozabite home and understand how domestic architecture, family life and the desert environment have influenced one another.
The M’Zab Valley
Béni Isguen forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed M’Zab Valley, a remarkable collection of fortified settlements established from the 11th century onwards. Together with Ghardaïa and Melika, Béni Isguen reveals the distinctive architecture, culture and traditions of the Mozabite people.
The surrounding palm grove provides another contrast with the densely built ksar. From viewpoints above the settlement, sunset across the houses, defensive walls and palms is one of the memorable sights of the M’Zab Valley.
Ghardaïa Carpet Festival
The wider Ghardaïa region is renowned for its traditional carpets and textiles. During the annual Ghardaïa Carpet Festival, the region celebrates this craft heritage through exhibitions, cultural activities, music and visits to the historic settlements of the M’Zab Valley.
Béni Isguen is particularly known for its traditional auction market, another fascinating expression of the commercial and social traditions of the community.
