Annaba, on Algeria’s north-eastern Mediterranean coast, is one of the country’s most attractive coastal cities, combining beaches and dramatic scenery with Roman archaeology, early Christian history and French colonial architecture. Known as Bône during the French colonial period, Annaba today is a lively port city and an excellent base from which to explore some of eastern Algeria’s most important historic sites.
The heart of modern Annaba includes the Cours de la Révolution, surrounded by distinctive colonial-era architecture, cafés and busy streets. Elsewhere, the city’s historic quarters, mosques and Casbah reveal older layers of its history and provide a fascinating contrast with the elegant European-influenced centre.
Hippo Regius and Saint Augustine
Close to Annaba lie the extensive ruins of Hippo Regius, one of the most important ancient cities in North Africa. The settlement was shaped by Phoenician, Numidian, Roman and later Vandal influences and is particularly associated with Saint Augustine, who became Bishop of Hippo and remained here until his death in AD 430.
The archaeological site contains the remains of streets, villas, baths, a theatre and early Christian buildings. Overlooking the ancient city is the striking Basilica of Saint Augustine, making Annaba an important destination for travellers interested in both Roman Algeria and the history of early Christianity.
Annaba and the Mediterranean Coast
Annaba’s appeal extends beyond its history. To the north, Cap de Garde offers dramatic Mediterranean coastal scenery, while the surrounding area combines wooded hills, beaches and panoramic viewpoints. The nearby mountain village of Seraïdi provides another perspective on the landscapes surrounding the city.
