Follow in the footsteps of Saint Augustine on this fascinating journey through Algeria’s early Christian and Roman heritage. Travel from Algiers to Annaba, Hippo Regius, Souk Ahras, Madaure and Guelma, visiting the places associated with his birth, education, ministry and enduring influence on Christian thought.

Day 1

Arrival in Algiers Arrive in Algiers and transfer to your city-centre hotel. Enjoy an introductory walking tour including the Esplanade, Place des Martyrs, Place Emir Abdelkader and the Grande Poste, one of Algiers’ finest neo-Moorish buildings.

UNESCO Casbah of Algiers and Notre Dame d'Afrique

Day 2

The Casbah and Notre Dame d’Afrique Explore the UNESCO-listed Casbah of Algiers, visit a historic mosque and the Museum of Arts and Crafts, and enjoy lunch in a private home. Continue to Bab El Oued, Marengo Gardens, the seafront and Notre Dame d’Afrique.

Day 3

Annaba and Hippo Regius Travel to Annaba and explore Hippo Regius, the ancient Roman city where Saint Augustine became bishop and served until his death in 430. Discover the remains of the great theatre, temples, basilicas and other important Roman monuments.

Day 4

Souk Ahras and Ancient Thagaste Drive south to Souk Ahras, ancient Thagaste, the birthplace of Saint Augustine and home of his mother, Saint Monica. Visit the traditional site of Saint Augustine’s olive tree, the town museum and places associated with his early life.

Day 5

Madaure, Where Augustine Studied Explore Madaure, ancient Madauros, a Numidian city later developed into a Roman settlement. Saint Augustine studied here as a young man, and the archaeological site contains some of eastern Algeria’s most impressive Roman remains.

Day 6

Guelma and Ancient Calama Visit Guelma, known in Roman times as Calama. Explore its beautifully restored Roman theatre, archaeological museum and open-air collection of columns, sculptures, inscriptions and architectural fragments.

Martyrs Memorial and Jardin d'Essai in Algiers

Day 7

Return to Algiers Return to Algiers and visit the Martyrs’ Memorial, the Museum of the Liberation and the Museum of Fine Arts. Continue to the Jardin d’Essai botanical gardens, renowned for their grand avenues and remarkable collection of plants.

Day 8

Departure from Algiers Enjoy some final free time in Algiers for shopping or independent exploration before transferring to Algiers International Airport for your return flight.

Saint Augustine - The Algerian

Saint Augustine or Aurelus Augustinus, a son of Algeria who was born to a Pagan father and devout Christian Catholic mother in Thaghaste (now Souk Ahras) on 13th November 354 AD. He is the most famous amongst the churchmen and he is considered as the greatest spirit of the 1st century of Christianity.

St Augustine is regarded as “The father of Roman Catholicism “or “The doctor of grace” because he preached peace and tolerance. All his thought was concentrated on God and the destiny of man.

Saint Augustine is also the founding father of the African monasticism. He hoped that Catholicism should be a religion of love. He was also the most humble churchman of his time. Aurelus began his studies first in Thaghast, then he went to Carthage to further his education like other promising Numidian students. He lived during the end of the Roman Empire.
