The Best of Algeria: Culture, Coast & Landscape
We begin with Djemila, formerly Cuicul, a Roman city founded in the first century AD and regarded as one of the best-preserved Roman archaeological sites in North Africa.
By contrast, Algiers is a vibrant Mediterranean capital, often known as Alger la Blanche – Algiers the White. Its architecture reflects centuries of Ottoman, Moorish and French influence, crowned by the historic Casbah of Algiers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nearby lies ancient Tipasa, a beautiful coastal archaeological site associated with the writer Albert Camus.
Travelling south, we reach Ghardaïa in the M’Zab Valley, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded by the Mozabites, an Ibadi Amazigh community, the valley is renowned for its distinctive architecture, strong cultural identity and remarkable desert setting.
We then return to the Mediterranean coast and Oran, an elegant city often nicknamed the “Bride of the Mediterranean”. Strongly influenced by its Spanish and French past, Oran is also known as the birthplace of Yves Saint Laurent and writer Hélène Cixous, and played an important role during Operation Torch in the Second World War.
Our journey continues to Tlemcen, a city shaped by Roman, Arab, Islamic and French influences. One of the highlights is the Great Mosque of Tlemcen, one of North Africa’s most important Islamic landmarks and a striking example of the region’s architectural heritage.
